Reader’s Workshop:

This past week students learned more ways to figure out tricky words.  They learned that good readers…

…know that words that sound the same are probably spelled the same, like the words floppy and sloppy.

…look for spelling patterns they know inside of words.

During read aloud we finished the book My Father’s Dragon.  The kids loved it.  Ask your children to give you a “Seven” finger retell of the book.  1. Setting, 2. Characters, 3. Beginning, 4. Problem, 5. Middle, 6. End and, 7. Solution.

Spelling Test!

Writer's Workshop

As we move into our new writing unit, your talented writers have now become teachers.

We have started our non-fiction writing unit with “How-To” books.  Children have been thinking of topics that they are experts at and we are starting to write books to teach others.  As we switch form story writing to procedural writing, children are learning to write in detailed steps.  This type of writing paves the way for informational writing, such as reports, and idea-based writing such as, essays.

Math Messages:

We will be finishing up Topic 12 – Tens and Ones, this week.  Students took the Topic 12 test on Tuesday.  Next we will start Topic 13 – Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 100.  To compare numbers is to determine which is more or which less is.  We will use the traditional symbols (greater than), (less than), and = (equal to).
