The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught as that every child should be given the wish to learn.

Curriculum Corner

In Open Court Reading we will learn a new spelling for the Nose card, kn as in knight.  We will spend the rest of the week reviewing sound/spelling patterns that have already been introduced. The story we will read this week to reinforce the new sound/spelling pattern is The Knight Who Did Not Know. The new sight words are any and many.  Please make up flashcards and practice these words until your child knows them by heart.

In Readers Workshop the children are working on a new unit of study,  "Reader's bring word power to reading." Children are learning how to use word attack strategies to assist them as they read.  They are also learning how reading partners can help them as they read by figuring out hard words together.

In Writer's Workshop we are working on our first non fiction writing unit.  The children are writing How-To books.  They are learning how to write specific steps in order to teach others how to do something. They are learning why it is important to be  explicit in order for the reader to be able to do what is being taught.

Number Patterns

We have been working on number patterns in first grade. Recognizing number patterns is an important part of understanding mathematics.  Children can begin to learn about number patterns by skip counting on a hundred chart.

NEW MATH WORDS:

hundred chart - shows numbers from 1 to 100

digit - numbers are made up of digits - example - 6 has 1 digit, 13 has 2 digits.

skip count - you use patterns to count when you skip count - example, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10...
