NEWS FROM 607

Thank you  to those of you who were able to make it to our reading and writing celebration!  The students were very excited to share their work with a real audience.  There was such a positive vibe in our room and the excitement for learning is sure to carry on for awhile.

We have skipped a few chapters in history in order to prepare for our trip to Sacrament next week.  We have begun learning about California's system of government.  Ask your student to tell you the three main branches: legislative, executive, and judicial.  As you can see the vocabulary for this unit will be challenging.  Anything you can do to help your child with these concepts will be greatly beneficial.

We finished up work on our auction project this week.  Thanks again to those of you who volunteered to come and assist us with this project.  Each child created a very unique lamp.  There was a lot of thought put into the decorating process of these lamps.  It was fun to hear why each child chose the colors or items they used to complete their lamp.   The lamps will be available for purchase on the auction online.  Check the Cougar Weekly for more details.

Thanks for continuing to support your child by looking through their Friday Folder, checking their planners, helping them to get all their completed homework back into their binders, and encouraging reading at home.  If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me at anytime.

SIncerely,

Nancy McCaul

Tips to Encourage Student Writing

  • Coach don't write for your student.  Question, listen, and talk about your child's writing with them.  Students need to be able to do their own drafting, revising, and editing while you coach from the sidelines.
  • Always look first for what your child has done well in their writing and praise your child for their accomplishments.
  • After complementing your child, focus on ways to improve their ideas or content first.  Save the editing until their ideas are clear, complete, and focused.
  • Share your own writing with your child.  Ask them to critique your work.
  • Read, read, read!  Better readers always make better writers!
